MANAGEMENT CONCEPT OF HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM AND THE NEED FOR MODERN TOOLS LIKE COMPUTERISATION AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Computerisation and Information Technology on various walks of life, has made a significant impact and greatly contributed to the development of industry in general. Equally important now is

its growing influence on the working and functioning of various government and private organizations. Management of higher education can not escape this impact. In fact, the university system is keen to lend itself to the adoption of computerisation. However, the impact still is a far cry, either because of certain vested interests or lack of motivation on the part of management, or both. Never the less it has already spread its wings and the onslaught is on. The question remains how and when one should do the beginning. On one had there is considerable progress and enthusiasm in adopting the new information technology (IT), but a proper timing and process of selection has to be thought besides enough financial resources and willing manpower to take the challenge. The only

other part remaining would be the proper selection of hardware and software packages.

However,before one would like to select the Grey areas of its influence in the university management, it may be appropriate to briefly outline the problems and issues of the university management in general and then pinpoint the areas where an effective and concentrated beginning could be made.

Identification of such issues will definitely help in its implications.

Broadly the higher education system, namely the University Administration has the following two dimensions:

Academic related and or Institutional Administration that keeps the system greased and going e.g. the management, the controls, the establishments, the accounting, the security and the over all upkeep.
Pure Academics - the syllabus, the teaching techniques and methodology, together with evaluation and examination system.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN HIGHER EDUCATION THE NEED

The influence of computerization and information technology has made its impact on the development of various disciplines, thereby improving the efficiency and delivery. These modern management tools can definitely help the university management systems;

to develop a data bank
to update the data bank
to provide information on finger tips
to be transparent and accessible
help the administration to be efficient, economic and less time consuming
to link various departments/sections/divisions and units and help
in better coordination/evaluation and accountability for disposal of papers

Today's efficiency of an institution is measured in terms of the following parameters;

1. How quick is the response to queries?
2. How quick is the disposal of cases?
3. How efficient are the mechanisms?

To illustrate the impact of IT and Computerization, we have a few examples of common day use like railway reservations, air travel reservations, banking systems particularly ATM and national and international Communication systems as a whole.

Therefore, if these systems have shown the improvement why not to adopt these systems in the university management as well, and make the system more functional, efficient and informative.
